Depiction of Culture in the Band's Visit Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Depiction of Culture in the Band's Visit - Essay Example The importance of cross cultural understanding has been impressively portrayed in the movie through the tale of Egyptian police orchestra arrived in Israel to play at the inauguration ceremony of the Arab Cultural Centre. When they arrived Israel there was no one at the airport to receive them and they seek the way to get at the spot at their own. On their way to reach the spot, the members of the group communicate and miscommunicate with each other and their interaction with each other and people in Israel shows the differences of cultures that influence the understanding of each other. The members of the band fall in to the problems due to the difference in the pronunciation of some letters in Arabic and English however, as they proceed they found that despite several cultural differences they share lots of human characteristics with the Israelis. The visit allows them exploring the similarities within the different cultures. The story of the movie tells about the situation when tw o set of people belonging to different culture interact with each other. The movie shows the strength of cross culture understanding and also explains how lives of the people are affected while moving in a culturally strange society. It gives the message that only the sense of humanity could help people in such situation because when someone could see them as human and not people of other culture they could come forward to help them, otherwise the culture biasness never allows people of different cultures to openly help each other at their best. The Egyptian band lost in Israel eventually reached a fictional town that was not their actual destination. At the town they were helped by a kind-hearted restaurant owner Dina who arranged space for the band members to spend night at her home and homes of her friends. While spending the night at the Israeli peopleââ¬â¢ homes the Egyptian bands and their Israeli hosts got the opportunity to know each other beyond the political and culture differences as they interact with each other as ordinary people regardless of their cultural identities. The movie shows that lives could become easy when people learn to put humanity first and political and cultural boundaries at second place. The band could face even tougher situation if people they met in Israel with give more importance to political and cultural boundaries and less to the humanity. However, their kind behaviour based on humanity allows them understanding each other and help each other to find out the way out from the troublesome situation the Egyptian band was facing in Israel. The night spent at the homes of the Israeli people turned out to be an interesting, funny yet challenging episode for the band members that changed their lives in little yet important ways by adding to their understanding of people from different cultures on the base of humanity. The strange and funny night spent by the band members allowed the learning a lot from the Israeli hosts and a t the same time the Israeli people also gain cross cultural understanding during their stay at their homes. The movie talks about the challenges that the people often encounter while interacting with the people of other c

Outdoor Essay Example for Free
Outdoor Essay 1. What are some of the benefits of using outdoor space in early childhood? Using outdoor space in early childhood provide children with health, cognitive, and social benefits. Health benefits: It gives children the opportunity to exercise their large muscles group much more than when they are indoors, because they have more space to run, skip, climb, swing, and jump. Playing outside also allow children to burn more calories than when they are inside. Cognitive benefits: When children play outside they often will make up their own games, by doing this they are exercising their problem solving skills. When children make the rules for the games and practice using them with friends, they are developing organizational abilities, and leadership qualities. Their creativity is enhanced and their imaginations are nourished. Social benefits: being outside promotes cooperative play which leads to the development of social skills. When children wait to take turns while playing a game, or when they work together with others to build something, these are ways children can enhance their social abilities outdoors. 2. Describe the role of the teacher in supporting outdoor space, including children with special needs. The teacher can be supportive by interacting with the children when they are outside, the teacher can do this by talking with the children about what and how they are going to play. The teacher can assist the children in different activities, for example: hopping, skipping, and climbing, and the teacher can also make sure that the children are safe while playing outdoors. The teacher must also plan activities that encourage children with special needs to participate while outdoors, but he/she should not use the same activities when they are outdoors with the special needs children. Creating different activities will provide the children with special needs the opportunity to use their bodies in new ways. 3. What problems can there be with static playground equipment and their traditional uses? Static playground equipment doesnââ¬â¢t stimulate childrenââ¬â¢s physical, cognitive, or creative development. Children need to experience new physical challenges; static playground equipment wonââ¬â¢t allow the children to use the equipment in a new way because it doesnââ¬â¢t change. Static playground equipment can make children feel limited in their play. 4. Describe three ways teachers can use traditional equipment in creative ways. Then create one idea of your own for using traditional equipment in a creative way. Teachers can use traditional equipment to engage children in group activities, by doing this he/she can enhance the childrenââ¬â¢s social skills. The teacher can play a game like follow the leader; he/she can walk around the swing, slide, jungle gym, and sand box while playing the game. Teachers can use the monkey bars to have the children pretend they are monkeys swinging and climbing their way through the jungle. While the children is doing the activity, the teacher can ask the children questions to challenge them, for example: how fast can you climb through the jungle, or how far do you think you can swing, Teachers can create a obstacle course using the traditional equipment, teachers can challenge the children to crawl through tires, climb over the monkey bars, swing on a swing, or try to balance themselves steady while standing on the outside of the sand box. The children must do all these things while traveling through the obstacle course. An activity I would do with the children in my class while outdoors, that involves using traditional equipment, would be to have the children pretend that they was at a water park. I would have the children to slide down the slide on the playground pretending that they are about to slide down into a pool.

Contrasting Ralph and Jack in Lord of the Flies Essay -- comparison co
Contrasting Ralph and Jack in Lord of the Flies Ralph and Jack are both powerful and meaningful characters in William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies. Ralph is an excellent leader; responsible, and stands for all that is good. Jack is a destructive hunter, selfish, and represents evil. These two main characters can be compared by the actions they take as leaders, their personalities, and what they symbolize in the story. Ralph first takes on the position as leader at the beginning of the story, when the rest of the boys vote him in as chief. He carries this position until Jack and his fellow hunters break away from the group. Ralph makes it his job to set out the rules to organize a society. Ralph always thinks of what is best for everyone and how they will all benefit from his decisions. Rules and standards are set when Ralph is the chief. He orders the group to build the basic necessities of civilization, shelters, and most importantly to keep the fire going, in hope that they will be rescued and return to humanity. "But I tell you that smoke is more important than the pig, however often you kill one" (Golding 75). Jack, on the other hand, takes on the idea of every man for himself. He does not care about making homes, only about hunting. When Jack is the leader, evil takes over and all good is destroyed. Under Jack's power both Simon and Piggy are killed. Not only do the two character's decisions clash so do their personalities. Ralph is caring and considerate, being kinder... ...nclusion. 2. While the body of your paper sticks to your thesis statement, it could be better organized. Since your organize your paper into three paragraphs, one concerning the boys' leadership, another their personalities and another their symbolism, each paragraph should be organized in the same manner. If you discuss Ralph first in the first paragraph then you should begin with Ralph in the other two paragraphs. Also you should fully discuss each character before moving on to the other. Switching back and forth can become confusing. 3. The correct method for quoting is "The conch is gone" (Golding 200). Instead of, "The conch is gone (Golding 200)." The parentheses are considered a part of the last sentence but not a part of the quote itself, so it should be included into the punctuation but not the quotation marks.

Of Mice and Men Essay
The Great Depression took place in the United States in the 1930s. Northern California, Salinas Valley was affected by the Great Depression. Many farmers lost their properties and were forced to find other work. Banks were forced to foreclose on mortgagesââ¬â¢ and had to collect debts. Hundreds of thousands of farmers packed up their families and few belongings, and headed for California. The Great Depression left many people in poverty and caused them to face unpleasant events. This is how life was like for the characters in Steinbeckââ¬â¢s novel Of Mice and Men. Mostly all the characters in this novel suffered from loneliness. Some of the men desired to come together in a way that would allow them to be like brothers to one another. Given the harsh, lonely conditions under which the men live, it is no surprise that they idealize friendship between other men in such a way. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization of dialogue and actions to show that everyone is lonely in some way even if they are surrounded by others. John Steinbeck uses characterization to show that loneliness causes people to reveal their feelings through dialogue. When Curleyââ¬â¢s wife walks into the farm, she sees Lennie and begins to talk to him. He tries to avoid her and she says ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËI never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonelyââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ (86). Curleyââ¬â¢s wife has no one to talk to, and even Lennie tries to avoid her. Her words reveal that she is very lonely and even though there are so many people around her, nobody wants to talk to her. These words are significant because it shows how lonely she really is and how everyone tries to keep away from her because they know she causes drama and that she is married to Curley. George and Lennie also experience loneliness that they show through dialogue. As George and Lennie walk to the ranch together, George says, ââ¬Ëââ¬Å"Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliness guys in the world. They got no family and they donââ¬â¢t belong to no placeâ⬠ââ¬â¢ (121). In addition, George and Lennie have no real home. They work the season, and then move on. They have no family, no relatives, and no ties except to each other. Georgeââ¬â¢s words reveal that the life style of migrant workers such as themselves gives the way to a lonely life. This dialogue is significant because it shows how George and Lennie are lonely and that even though they travel and meet new people they still possess some kind of loneliness. Even though George was surrounded by many of the men, he sat quietly by himself at on the table all alone. ââ¬Å"George cut the cards and began turning them over, looking at each one and throwing it down in a pileâ⬠(27). George is occupying his time by sitting alone at the table and organizing cards. Georgeââ¬â¢s actions show that he is lonely and has nothing better to do then organize a deck of cards. His actions are significant because it reveals how George is lonely and how he spends his time by himself organizing cards. Also, when Crooks experiences loneliness he occupies himself with books. Even though Crooks is surrounded by so many men, he often feels lonely, but he tries to convince himself that he is not lonely. ââ¬Ëââ¬Å" Sââ¬â¢pose you had to sit out here anââ¬â¢ read books. ââ¬â¢ Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. ââ¬â¢ Books aniââ¬â¢t no good. ââ¬â¢ A guy needs somebody to be near himâ⬠¦ he goes nuts if he ainââ¬â¢t got nobodyâ⬠ââ¬â¢ (72). Crooks is very lonely and he wishes that he could have someone to talk to, but he tries to be busy by playing horseshoes and reading books. His actions show that he is extremely lonely, and that he occupies himself with little things to keep himself from suffering. Crookââ¬â¢s actions are significant because loneliness cause people to spend their time by themselves. In the novel Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck uses characterization of dialogue and actions to reveal that one can be surrounded by a group and still be lonely. The use of dialogue proves that the characters are lonely even though they are working closely together. Also, through the characterization of actions the author reveals that most of the men are lonely and that the men occupy themselves even though they are with a group of people. John Steinbeckââ¬â¢s theme applies to the entire would because it proves that loneliness affects everyone at one time or another. It changes the way a person thinks and behaves. When people feel lonely their actions and way of life are affected. Nobody can run away from loneliness even if they live with a group of people. Itââ¬â¢s a trait that no one can get rid of.

Saturn1 essays
Saturn1 essays Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun and it is the second largest of the nine planets in the solar system. In Roman mythology it was believed to be the god of agriculture, he ate his children. Its Greek name is Cronos. Saturn is distinctively known for its ring system, which was first seen by Galileo in 1610. Of all the planets Saturn has the most moons, with a total of twenty-eight. Until recently, there were only 18 known moons that were orbiting Saturn. In the last ten months astronomers have discovered ten more, making the total twenty-eight. The diameters of Saturns moons range from 20 to 5150 km. They are mostly made up of ice, gas and dust nebula form which the solar system was formed and from where the sun could not evaporate the frozen gases and ice. The five largest known Saturn moons are Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea. Diones surface is believed to be 40% rock material and it has many craters that have been caused by meteorite impacts. Many astronomers think that there is tectonic activity happening on Eceladus. Dion and Rhea look very similar on the outside because they are both very bright and wispy streaks on their surface, caused by ice from the interior that has moved to the surface. Last week, a Canadian astronomer named J.J. Kavelaars, discovered four of the ten new moons. These newly discovered moons are different from the other moons. The new ones are much smaller and their orbits are highly inclined relative to Saturns rings and its equator. Also, they are highly elliptical. Some of Saturns moons orbit in the same direction as Saturn and others go in the opposite direction. Because of the unusual orbit of some of the moons, many astronomers believe that Saturn captured these moons after it was formed 4.6 billion years ago. The density of Saturn compared to Earth is eight times less because ...

How to Properly Clean Laboratory Glassware
How to Properly Clean Laboratory Glassware Cleaning laboratory glassware isnt as simple as washing the dishes. Heres how to wash your glassware so you wont ruin your chemical solution or laboratory experiment. The Basics Its generally easier to clean glassware if you do it right away. When a detergent is used, its usually one designed for lab glassware, such as Liquinoxà or Alconox. These detergents are preferable to any dishwashing detergent that might be used on dishes at home. Usually, detergent and tap water are neither required nor desirable. You can rinse the glassware with the proper solvent, then finish up with a couple of rinses with distilled water, followed by final rinses with deionized water. Washing Out Common Chemicals Water Soluble Solutionsà (e.g., sodium chloride or sucrose solutions): Rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away.Water Insoluble Solutionsà (e.g., solutions in hexane or chloroform): Rinse 2-3 times with ethanol or acetone, rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away. In some situations, other solvents need to be used for the initial rinse.Strong Acidsà (e.g., concentrated HCl or H2SO4): Under the fume hood, carefully rinse the glassware with copious volumes of tap water. Rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away.Strong Basesà (e.g., 6M NaOH or concentrated NH4OH): Under the fume hood, carefully rinse the glassware with copious volumes of tap water. Rinse 3-4 times with deionized water, then put the glassware away.Weak Acidsà (e.g., acetic acid solutions or dilutions of strong acids such as 0.1M or 1M HCl or H2SO4): Rinse 3-4 times with deionized water before putting the glassware away.Weak Basesà (e.g. , 0.1M and 1M NaOH and NH4OH): Rinse thoroughly with tap water to remove the base, then rinse 3-4 times with deionized water before putting the glassware away. Washing Special Glassware Glassware Used for Organic Chemistry Rinse the glassware with the appropriate solvent. Use deionized water for water-soluble contents. Use ethanol for ethanol-soluble contents, followed by rinses in deionized water. Rinse with other solvents as needed, followed by ethanol, and, finally, deionized water. If the glassware requires scrubbing, scrub with a brush using hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly with tap water, followed by rinses with deionized water. Burets Wash with hot soapy water, rinse thoroughly with tap water, then rinse 3-4 times with deionized water. Be sure the final rinses sheet off of the glass. Burets need to be thoroughly clean to be used for quantitative labwork. Pipets and Volumetric Flasks In some cases, you may need to soak the glassware overnight in soapy water. Clean pipets and volumetric flasks using warm soapy water. The glassware may require scrubbing with a brush. Rinse with tap water followed by 3-4 rinses with deionized water. Drying or Not Drying It is inadvisable to dry glassware with a paper towel or forced air since this can introduce fibers or impurities that can contaminate the solution. Normally you can allow glassware to air dry on the shelf. Otherwise, if you are adding water to the glassware, it is fine to leave it wet (unless it will affect the concentration of the final solution.) If the solvent will be ether, you can rinse the glassware with ethanol or acetone to remove the water, then rinse with the final solution to remove the alcohol or acetone. Rinsing with Reagent ââ¬â¹If water will affect the concentration of the final solution, triple rinse the glassware with the solution. Drying Glassware If glassware is to be used immediately after washing and must be dry, rinse it 2-3 times with acetone. This will remove any water and will evaporate quickly. While its not a great idea to blow air into glassware to dry it, sometimes you can apply a vacuum to evaporate the solvent. Additional Tips Remove stoppers and stopcocks when they are not in use. Otherwise, they may freeze in place. You can degrease ground glass joints by wiping them with a lint-free towel soaked with ether or acetone. Wear gloves and avoid breathing the fumes. The deionized water rinse should form a smooth sheet when poured through clean glassware. If this sheeting action is not seen, more aggressive cleaning methods may be needed.
